St Pete Celebrates With Shakespeare

St. Petersburg Opera Company is thrilled to be part of the inaugural St. Petersburg Celebration of the Arts, a monthlong cultural salute to the works of Shakespeare.

With book by Samuel and Bella Spewack, and Porter’s unbeatable, Tony-winning music and lyrics, Kiss Me, Kate is the story of a touring theatrical production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Battling exes Fred and Lilli are starring as Petruchio and Kate, but will the show survive their combustible chemistry?

With sweethearts Bill (aka Lucentio) and Lois (Bianca) in the mix, the show-within-a-show shenanigans go through the roof! Can Bill evade the ruthless gangsters looking to collect a gambling debt? Will the flirtatious Lois always be true to him – in her fashion?
Featuring such classic songs as “Why Can’t You Behave?,” “Too Darn Hot,” “So in Love,” “Another Op’nin’, Another Show,” “Wunderbar” and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare,” Kiss Me, Kate is a wickedly clever, fast-paced musical comedy with a full, Broadway-sized orchestra conducted by St. Pete Opera executive and musical director Mark Sforzini, spectacular dancing and a cast of professional singers and actors, directed and choreographed by Daryl Gray.
Performances are at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2 and 3; 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Friday, Feb. 5 and 8; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. Tickets, $20-$75, are available at stpeteopera.org, or by calling the box office at (727) 823-2040.
